Abstract

With urbanization on the rise, it is expected that by 2050, about two third of the world’s population will live in cities, with much of the migration occurring in developing nations. With this growing migration into the cities, they consume over two-thirds of global energy and responsible for the major portions of the world’s total greenhouse gas emission. This concentration implies that to reduce emissions globally, it is required to reduce emissions in cities. Apart from the emission the urban agglomeration faces problems like traffic congestion, poor sanitation, drainage, seasonal floods, poor waste management, and water pollution. Keeping these problems in mind, the concept of smart cities is on the rise. In this article the author wants to summarize that how the smart cities and its components affect climate change mitigation and adaptation and the need for relevant decision- making frameworks within cities to bring about the change.
