Abstract

A number of issues must be addressed in further work on this system. Currently the Q-values obtained for the Niobium cavities are of only a few thousand. Whether this is due to the coupling into the cavity being too strong or whether excess losses are due to an oxide layer on the Niobium must be investigated. For a horizontally orientated cavity the sample enters through the side of the cavity, therefore the sapphire rod enters through a region of high electric field.
