Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is one of the common metabolic disorders acquiring around 2.8% of the world's population and is anticipated to cross 5.4% by the year 2025 (Patel et al, 2012).Patients with non-insulin diabetes have been treated orally in folk medicine with a variety of plant extracts since time immemorial (Ivorra et al, 1989). A large number of plant products with potential hypoglycemic activity have been cited in the available literature. In few of these plant products hypoglycemic activity has been clearly demonstrated in animal experiments and human trials. The chemical constituents have been isolated in a few instances whereas in most plants the active constituent is yet to be identified. The present paper attempts to review some of the Indian plants with potential hypoglycemic effects.
