Abstract

Home automation technologies can transform a home into a smart home. Lighting, heating and other appliances are remotely controlled by the tenants via smartphone and Internet connection or automatically by sophisticated control mechanisms and trained behavior. Comfort, energy efficiency, health care, and security are provided by a smart home to its users. In spite of miscellaneous benefits, there are also new threats for the home and its tenants. An attacker can manipulate the system by replay or injection attacks, for example, to take control over the appliances or to cause a denial of service. In the worst case, the health and life of tenants can be endangered by an attack, which suppresses an alarm. Successful attacks can also violate the privacy by observing life style habits of the tenants like sleeping times, motion profiles or preferred radio programs.
